Ultimate Care Guide for Crassula ovata ‘Gollum’

Crassula ovata ‘Gollum’, commonly referred to as Gollum Jade, is an eye-catching succulent with tubular, finger-like leaves that often have a reddish tinge at the tips.

Its unique shape and whimsical appearance make it a favorite among succulent enthusiasts and perfect for adding a fun twist to any indoor or outdoor space.

In this blog, we’ll explore how to care for Crassula ovata ‘Gollum’, ensuring it thrives in your home or garden.

Basic Care Information

Aspects Crassula ovata ‘Gollum’
Appearance : Features tubular, finger-like leaves, often with a reddish tinge at the tips.
Light requirements : Full sun to partial shade.
Mature Size: Grows up to 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide.
Watering Schedule : Water when the soil is dry, about once every 2-3 weeks.
Fertilize Schedule : Feed once a month during the growing season with diluted succulent fertilizer.
Dormancy Period : Dormant in high heat; reduce watering during dormancy.
USDA Hardiness Zone : USDA Hardiness Zones 9, tolerates temperatures down to 20°F (-6.7°C).
Propagation Techniques : Easily propagated via stem or leaf cuttings.
Toxicity : Mildly toxic to pets.

Watering Needs

Like most succulents, Gollum Jade is drought-tolerant and thrives on minimal watering. For a 4-5 inch pot, water around 1/8 to 1/4 cup every 2-3 weeks, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During its dormancy in high heat, reduce watering to prevent root rot. At Happy Succulent Care, we always recommend following the proper watering technique to ensure your succulent stays healthy.

Light Requirements

Gollum Jade does best in full sun to partial shade. Bright light helps maintain its vibrant leaf color and compact form, especially the reddish tinge on the tips of the leaves. If grown indoors, place it near a bright, sunny window. If your home doesn’t receive enough natural light, you can use a grow-light for indoor succulents to ensure the plant gets adequate lighting.

Fertilizing Schedule

Gollum Jade benefits from light feeding during its growing season (spring to fall). For a 4-5 inch pot, use 1/8 teaspoon of succulent fertilizer diluted to half strength and feed once a month. Avoid fertilizing during the summer dormancy. For more tips on fertilizing succulents, check out the fertilize guide for succulents to keep your plant well-nourished.

Propagation Tips

Propagating Crassula ovata ‘Gollum’ is simple and effective. It can be propagated from either stem or leaf cuttings. Allow the cuttings to callous for a day or two before planting them in well-draining soil. If you’re new to propagation, our basic propagation guide for succulents provides a step-by-step process for easy propagation success.

Advanced Care

  • Soil Requirements: Like other succulents, Gollum Jade prefers well-draining soil, such as a succulent or cactus mix, to avoid water retention that can lead to root rot.
  • Container Choice: This plant looks fantastic in decorative pots or as part of a larger succulent arrangement. Make sure the container has drainage holes to allow excess water to escape.
  • Pest Management: Crassula ovata ‘Gollum’ is generally pest-resistant but can sometimes attract mealybugs or aphids. Inspect your plant regularly and treat any infestations with neem oil or rubbing alcohol.

Unique Traits

The unusual, tubular leaves of Crassula ovata ‘Gollum’ give it a distinct, quirky appearance that adds character to any space. Its striking red-tinged leaf tips make it stand out in any succulent arrangement or as a standalone houseplant. However, it is mildly toxic to pets, so be cautious if you have animals at home.
